I have been a jeweler for a month
Sep. 12th, 2009 | 11:11 pm
location: Tucson
For a month I have been working at my new job in a jeweler's workshop. I've known my new boss, William, since the early 90's, and I've always wanted to be able to do what he does.
The basic premise of my job is that I inject wax into moulds created from pieces of jewelry William made. Those wax copies of his work will be cast in metal, cleaned up with a tool that grinds off rough parts, put in vibrating containers filled with stone-like beads to further grind off imperfections, then another grinder with different beads, then vibrating wall nut shells, packaged, and sold. I can do about 70% of that at this point in my career.
My first non-work project has been to make little bronze juggling clubs.

NZJF09 Shirt Design
Apr. 21st, 2009 | 02:13 pm
location: Tucson

The original design for the 2009 NZ Juggling Festival t-shirt had some legal issues, so I was asked to put something together based on designs I had done for the festival web site. On the front I used a design based on an idea given to me by Jo Stott of Fling Juggling about a fern leaf made from juggling clubs. The back was based on a design of a koru made of juggling clubs.

Yes, lets!

Claire and I have known each other for three years. We traveled to Christchurch together when we first met. She likes to play a game called "yes, lets!" It starts with her suggesting we do something, and then me saying, "yes, lets!" It's usually something I've never done before.
Over the past two months as I traveled around New Zealand, here are some of my favorite "yes, lets" moments.

Easter Weekend in Northland

location: New Zealand
I've spent the weekend in Northland helping Drew the juggler build his house. I think we may get the stairs done today. Over the weekend we went to a party for some friends of his who had gotten residency after living here for the past five years. This is some footage from the party.

Random travel log from Mt. Maunganui
Mar. 28th, 2009 | 02:46 pm
location: Mt. Maunganui

I am fully in van travel mode now, parked up next to the traveling big top in Mt. Maunganui. Today I spent the morning cleaning the van up and reorganizing things. Traveling with me this week is Vanessa Vortex, who I met at the Lopez Juggling Festival in September. When I met her, she was about to leave for circus school in Australia. I remember telling her what a great time she was going to have, and to try and get to the New Zealand festival if she's still around then. I was a bit surprised to find that she had indeed found a way to New Zealand, so after the juggling festival, we went off on some travels with my friend Graham who had come over from Australia, and Tony who I had lived with in Auckland in 2006. We drove up to the east coast of the Coromandel and camped out for a couple of days.

Heading back to Auckland in the van
Mar. 13th, 2009 | 02:57 pm
I drove the van to Otaki from Wellington following a lead on a mechanic who can give the van a Warrant of Fitness. Spent the evening discussing the festival with Jo, who supplies New Zealand with most of its juggling equipment.
Being back in the van is such a wonderful feeling. I can't think of anything I enjoy more than traveling across the rolling hills of the north island in my van. Over the years I've made countless little modifications to the inside to make things more livable. A clothes line. Touch lights with magnets stuck to the back. A tiny chandelier that lights up over the stove. It is a home without a property.
Over the next few days I'll be working my way up north towards Auckland to hit the juggling festival. For me, this will be a reunion with friends I've made over the last three years of travel. I am so looking forward to it.

Last night I went and picked up the van. Today she's getting some tires replaced and then I'll be searching for a mechanic to get her road-worthy again.

Balloon Man
Mar. 2nd, 2009 | 09:41 am
Over the weekend I helped my friends out at a gig in the town of Taupo. I got ready the night before by learning to make some basic ballon sculptures and then practiced them in the car on the drive down. We arrived at the event, a family day for a trucking company, and I got into costume. With fist-fulls of balloons in my pockets, I went into the main tent and the kids immediately started lining up. Because I only knew a few different designs, I made suggestions about what sorts of balloons they might enjoy. Balloon swords go over with the boys exceedingly well. Once one of them goes charging around the room with one in hand, the rest all want one. In the end, I probably made about three flowers, one dog, one retarded looking gun, and thirty swords.
